New Online PlayStation Store Launched, Automatic Downloads a Possible Future

Sony network Entertainment International and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, have today unveiled a new online store which will allow PlayStation owners to purchase games, videos and even more content via their desktop web browser. The new store is currently available in 15 European countries and also Australia and New Zealand, the site offers an easy to use search functionality to purchase all game-related content including downloadable games, add-ons, themes and also movies and TV shows all while they are away from their PlayStation consoles.

The new online store

This new online store launch follows the recent PlayStation Store redesign, which I examined earlier this year. It has been said that these two new store options will continue to be updates and improved with new features, greatest usability and convenience when it comes to purchasing your favourite content.

Just a few examples have been revealed is the addition of an advanced recommendation system and the ability to use your mobile phone or tablet to browse the new store. But the most exciting possibly comes from Sony’s statements of “automatic remote download of purchased content”, which means you can purchase a video game away from home and instead of waiting for the game to download at home, the game will be installed and ready to go on your return.

Quite snazzy

At the moment however purchases will proceed to the Download List on either your Vita or PlayStation 3 and then available to download from there. The possibility of an automatic download system has me very excited, purchasing content from the PlayStation Store, especially full games can be a nuisance. Due to the fact these games are gigabytes in size and may take a long time to download if the user’s internet speed isn’t up to scratch. For example Grand Theft Auto V is said to be 60GB’s in size, imagine the time this automatic download system could save.

The possibilities excite me

The new online store is now live in the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Russia, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark and Finland and can be accessed from the Sony Entertainment Network. Yet video content will only be available in Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Australia.

For those in North America and other regions, the store will be available in the future.
