EA Happy to Publish Amalur Sequel
Late last week EA has said they would love to publish a sequel to the 2012 Action/RPG Kingdoms of Amalu: Reckoning Via VideoGamer in an interview with GameInformer magazine, Frank Gibeau (EA Labels president) stated, “I think it’s unfortunate how everything worked out [for 38 Studios]. At the end of the day we saw a lot of creativity and vision in the team that Curt [Schilling] put together.” Regarding the controversial staff wide lay off of 38 Studios last month. “We thought the game was terrific. It reviewed well. We built a good business there and hope there’s a sequel to it someday. We’d love to be a partner for that.”
Last month Reckoning was deemed a “failure” by the government of the US State of Rhode Island, sadly having to lay off its entire staff to pay back the loans and payments it has receieved from the government to fund the project. Sadly 38 Studios was already hard at work on a follow-up with a anonymous source saying, “We had a good base to work from, and it was going to be all about improving everything,” the source said. “We listened carefully to fans and critics and were going to implement everything we possibly could.”
Joystiq however recently reported that EA originally passed on the opportunity to publish a sequel to the Amalur series due to “executive politics”, at which point 38 Studios was already in the process of finding a new publisher.
Sadly the chances of any of this becoming reality are slim to none, with the Amalur IP owned by the US State of Rhode Island, who are also in the current process of reclaiming 38 Studios to deal with the losses Amalur dealt them.
Would you be interested in a Amalur sequel? Do you think EA just wanted to avoid being attached to the controversial demise of 38 Studios? Let us know in the comments below.
