Dragons Dogma Hits 1 Million
Dragons Dogma is a total success. Capcom has come out to reveal that Dragons Dogma has sold 1.05 million units since release, these details come forth from Capcom’s April-June Financial Report. Numbers were strong at the end of June and it seems the numbers have only got better for the new IP, this definitely proves that new IP’s can make a big splash in sales this late into a console cycle.
“I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky…”
Capcom had stated they want to, “develop this entirely new brand into a major franchise“. With sales figures as impressive as these Capcom has found a financial winner in this new franchise, Capcom has also said it hopes this game has done well by “setting the stage for creating a series of titles”. Capcom recently released Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City to disappointing numbers critically and commercially, but with Dogma’s success have been able to post a 300% profit this quarter, with $237 million revenue.
So now that they have established Dragon’s Dogma as a new franchise, what will future titles in the series have to offer. Recently Famitsu (Via Andriasang) interviewed Hideaki Itsuno, in which he stated the finished game world was actually only two thirds the size he originally imagined. Also the fact he wanted players to be able to create their own quests during the game, with already a few ideas not implemented in the finished title, these could very well be worked on into a sequel.
New IP’s have done very strong this year, even though Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was marred by a tragic ending to 38 Studio’s, the game sold over 1 million units as well and was one of the biggest sellers at the start of this year.
So much for new IP’s dying at the end of a console life-cycle, huh?
