Diablo 3 is Running on Consoles

Earlier this year Blizzard expressed their interest in the possibility of porting Diablo 3 to consoles, though they never confirmed it would become available. Today however Blizzard confirmed they currently have Diablo 3 running on consoles, though it is still not confirmed as an “official project” at this time.

An interview with Polygon, Blizzard executive Rob Pardo stated that the team were only testing the waters to see how the game would run on unspecified consoles; could they be testing on next generation hardware? If all of these testing phases go well, it is fair to assume that the port will go ahead.

Pardo further explained, “We’ve got builds up and running on it. We’re hoping to get it far enough along where we can make it an official project, but we’re not quite ready to release stuff about it, but it’s looking pretty cool.” All signs seems to be positive for the console version though, he made sure to confirm that is was something they were “Still kind of exploring”.

Lead designer on Diablo 3 Jay Wilson also gave his two cents, agreeing with Pardo that this was still in the exploration stages and that the team is currently focussed on expanding the original game. “The whole team is essentially working on the next big Diablo thing,” Wilson stated. “A lot of that stuff will show up next year at some point.” Could this be a Diablo 3 expansion pack? And if this does come to consoles, could this be included with the original game?

Diablo 3 released earlier this year and quickly became the fastest selling PC game of all time and also proudly had 10 million players at its best. However players have started jumping off the Diablo 3 bandwagon with account hacking, glitches and the lack of the PvP patch which was announced way before the game was released. Could this patch be included in the new Diablo 3 content?

No dates have been set for any Diablo 3 expansion and there is no confirmation of a Diablo 3 console port from the Blizzard camp, but signs a definitely looking up for console gamers getting a taste of some loot driven action. Diablo 3 was good enough to make our nominees list for PC Game of the Year, come check out the rest of the nominees right here.
