‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Created With Upgraded Engine

Call of Duty: Ghosts was originally announced on a “new engine”. However it has been confirmed this is not the case, with the original engine instead featuring significant upgrades.

In an interview with OPM, Infinity Ward’s Animation Lead Zach Volker spoke regarding Ghosts engine. “When we’re talking about a new engine we’re talking about upgrading significant systems within in that engine. We’re not talking about throwing it all away and saying we’re starting from the ground up”.

Volker continued clarifying that it would be “impossible to develop a new engine from the ground up in a two year cycle,”

“What we do is we say, ‘okay what are the things that are significant and that we would say that are encompassing of the engine or its visual quality? Are those being upgraded in a significant way? Alright, then I think that warrants that we’ve got a new engine on our hands”.

Infinity Ward has stated the game will be using a new engine multiple times since its announcement. Though the two year cycle between Call of Duty titles, seems to be keeping the idea of a brand new engine at great lengths.

Does this lack of clarification on the matter change your views on the game? Was the footage revealed at the Xbox One event impressive?
