5.3 Million PS4’s Sold

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced the PlayStation 4 had sold through more than 5.3 million units as of February 8, 2014.

The announcement was made earlier today and comes the week before PlayStation 4 launches in Japan, February 22. Sony originally stated they wanted to sell 5 million PlayStation 4 consoles by the end of the financial year (March 31, 2014), which is a target they have now surpassed.

“I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

“We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States.  The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans.  February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”

Sony originally stated the PlayStation 4 had sold 2.1 million units before the end of 2013, before updating their sales in January to 4.2 million. It was also announced this week a special limited edition Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes PlayStation 4 will be available in Japan.
